Job Description:

The temporary Media Relations Associate will assist in implementing the College's expanding efforts to increase its reputation as a national leader in art and design higher education. MICA's Office of Communications is undergoing significant changes as it prepares for new leadership and the development of a new strategic effort to expand greatly external awareness of MICA and its impact on art and design locally, regionally and nationally. This position will report to the associate vice president for institutional communications, works 40 hours a week without benefits, and is a temporary position.

Duties include:

  • Identify, develop, write and promote newsworthy story ideas about MICA's programs, people, admissions, development, exhibitions and other key campus priorities
  • Research and write an issue of Juxtapositions, MICA's events and exhibitions magazine
  • Promote newsworthy story ideas for use in news media, news releases, the College's publications and Web site
  • Edit Cobalt Soup, the weekly online newsletter for the College's internal audiences
  • Interact with faculty and staff on campus, as well as local, regional and national news media in providing writing support for news releases and related items
  • Respond to routine media relations requests
  • Work closely with the associate vice president for institutional communications, the media relations manager and the administrative assistant for media relations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Participate in department and Advancement Division meetings and planning activities

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, writing, communications, journalism or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years experience in public relations or journalism
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Comfortable working with a Web site content management system
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Flexibility to adapt to a constantly changing work environment
  • Familiarity with local, regional and national news media
  • Appreciation for the role and impact of higher education, specifically art and design education on society
  • Successful Candidate will be required to complete a full background check

Valued but not required:

  • Familiarity with InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and database software
  • Interest in contemporary art, arts education


Additional Information:

Salary: Mid 30's, negotiable and commensurate with experience.
