Job Description:

The Illustration Department of Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for a full-time position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution.

Begins: Fall 2010. The College seeks a candidate with experience in the field of or related fields of illustration and a distinguished professional career. The candidate should have the ability to teach at multiple levels; have a sophisticated awareness of illustration markets, understand studio practice in illustration, and related fields; understand professional development; have an up-to-date knowledge of industry and advocacy issues, awareness of copyright issues; and have the ability to discuss the components of creating and maintaining a viable studio practice with a contemporary vision of the practice of illustration. An understanding and enthusiasm for the current shifts and changes in the practice of illustration and having the ability to represent these to students is essential. Experience in lecture and critique formats and ability to work with students in groups and one-on-one, and natural abilities for advisement and professional counseling are important. Candidates should show general knowledge of traditional media uses, have strong visual and critical abilities and familiarity with digital technology such as Photoshop. Candidates that meet the criteria mentioned above and who have leadership experience as exampled by administrative committee work or other experiences that demonstrate administrative abilities are urged to apply. Additionally an interest in curriculum on the history of illustration is preferred. The successful candidate will teach 9 credits per semester. A cross-departmental assignment at the College, where appropriate, may be possible. The candidate would participate in departmental and institutional responsibilities such as advisement and committee service.

Requirements:

  • MFA degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience
