Job Description:

The Security Guard ensures the safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, facilities, and property of the College by maintaining building, lobby and campus property security to prevent loss, injury, provide safety, prevent infraction of rules, direct persons, answer questions and assist the community.  Security Guards conduct interior and exterior building patrols to ensure order and safety. The position reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety.

Duties include:

  • Patrol areas of the campus, greet the public when they entering buildings, provide directions, assistance and escorts
  • Provide safety and security for the campus
  • Effectively receive/transmit radio communications, electronic messages and receive and relay information via landline phone
  • Author incident and administrative reports in a complete, clear and concise manner.  May be asked to conduct basic investigations
  • Operate access control and safety systems of the building including the location of emergency exits, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, etc
  • Understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the college, Federal, State and local laws, while performing duties of the position 
  • Ability to adjust to fluctuating situations, and act quickly and intelligently in an emergency situation whether acting independently or in with other team members
  • Maintains complete and accurate logs and records, conducts campus patrols, and building/lobby security
  • Able to work in an on-call work status. Be required to work varied shifts including weekends, nights, and/or holidays
  • Must maintain a telephone contact number and a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Perform other related duties as assigned/reassigned by the shift supervisor

Requirements:

  • Outstanding candidates will have at least one year of fulltime, or equivalent part-time, experience in a law enforcement or security setting
  • Previous experience working with a two way radio or similar devices
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with names, numbers and codes
  • Experience with emergency situations that require ability to stay calm, exercise sound judgment, and act quickly, when necessary
  • Excellent customer service with the ability to communicate effectively, in a business like courteous manner
  • Ability to take and follow: directions, deployment plans and action plans
  • Basic computer skills, capable of learning to operate new technology and software
  • Ability work in physically demanding conditions, under stressful, fatiguing, fast-paced  environment
  • No criminal record that would restrict access to criminal justice information
  • Successfully complete an entrance level physical agility test and pass an annual physical fitness test
  • Successful Candidate will be required to complete a full background check

Valued but not required:

  • Certification in CPR and First Aid, including Basic Life Support. (must obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Graduate of a 4 week or longer Maryland Police Training Commission Police Training program
  • Supervisory, investigation or administrative experience
  • Associate's degree or certificate in a related police science discipline may be substituted for required work experience


Additional Information:

Salary: $10.72 per hour with $0.50 night differential; includes extensive benefits package.
