Job Description:

The Institutional Patrol Officer (IPO) patrols campus buildings, grounds and neighboring communities on foot or other forms of transportation, may act as shift supervisor, provides on the job training to assist subordinates in development of administrative and technical skills and performs related administrative duties as required. The IPO provides law enforcement and security services that promote a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, facilities, and for the protection of College property. The position reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety.

Duties include:

  • Patrols buildings, grounds and adjacent areas on foot, bike, Segway and/ or in vehicle; guards against trespass, theft or damage to property; conducts surveillance of high crime areas
  • Investigates all crimes and missing goods or persons, complaints, accidents and suspicious activities/persons/vehicles; and inspects buildings, grounds, fire lanes and emergency exits for health/safety compliance
  • Supervise or gathers evidence in preparation for court use and may appear in court as witness
  • Serve as officer in charge during emergencies until superior officer's arrival;
  • Completes clear  and concise reports, and assists, reviews and approves written reports submitted by ISO or Security Guard staff
  • Operates motor vehicle, occasionally at high speed for pursuit or emergency response
  • May be subject to different and/or varied shifts including weekends, holidays or nights and on-call work status
  • Read, interpret, and explain procedures, guidelines, policies, legal documents, maps, charts, building plans that govern assigned department activities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and must be capable of performing all the duty requirements of lower grade positions

Requirements:

  • 3 years of full-time or 6 years part-time experience in security or law enforcement
  • Maintain a current valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record 
  • Graduation from a 4 week or longer Maryland Police Training Commission Police program
  • Clear concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience using equipment used in public safety work, including emergency medical certification, and uses of basic protective firefighting equipment
  • Knowledge of the terminology, codes and standard abbreviations used in security/police work
  • Knowledge of methods and operating procedures for foot/vehicle (bike, Segway, car) patrols
  • General knowledge of criminal law and procedures
  • Excellent customer service while communicating effectively, in a business like courteous manner
  • Successfully complete an entrance level agility test and annual physical fitness test
  • No criminal record that would prevent appointment as licensed special police officer under Maryland Laws
  • Successful Candidate will be required to complete a full background check

Valued but not required:

  • Supervisory experience, including ability to lead, motivate, and coach employees
  • Wide-ranging knowledge of campus security practices
  • Possess or ability to obtain First Responder Certification
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid, including Basic Life Support (must obtain with 90 days of hire)
  • Ability to motivate, instruct and lead subordinates including initiating disciplinary action
  • Associate's degree in a related police science discipline may be substituted for 1 year of required work experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in one of the police science disciplines may be substituted for 2 years experience


Additional Information:

Salary: $15.29 per hour with $0.50 night differential; includes extensive benefits package.
