Job Description:
The Police Sergeant provides law enforcement and security services that promote a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, facilities, and for the protection of College property. The position patrols campus buildings, grounds and neighboring communities on foot or other forms of transportation, act as shift supervisor, provide on the job training to assist subordinates in development of administrative and technical skills and performs related administrative duties as required. The position reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety. Duties include: - Must be proficient and technically skilled while performing all the duty requirements of each subordinate under their command
- Apply knowledge of crime prevention, patrol, crime suppression deployment, interviewing, gathering evidence and criminal investigations techniques
- Supervise specifically assigned shift, whether on duty or off (24/7)
- Oversee subordinate work for proper performance in conformance with state and campus laws, rules, regulations, instructions, and procedures
- Perform superior administrative skills in organizing, delegating and directing the work of others
- Author clear, concise and complete directives, reports, proposals and work plans
- Effectively evaluate subordinate performance, train personnel, discipline and provide guidance and counseling when needed
- Possess conceptual skills to include the ability to problem solve, plan and see the big picture, enhance moral and instill esprit de corps
- Patrol the campus and neighboring communities at regular intervals on foot and other means of transportation
- Required to work shift work, weekends and holidays
- Takes command of Campus Safety/Police Department in times of emergency until the arrival of a superior officer
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in law enforcement work in a department having 20 or more sworn officers
- Associate's degree in a related police science discipline may be substituted for 1 year of required work experience
- Bachelor's degree/higher with a major in one police science discipline may be substituted for 2 years experience
- Graduate of a 10 week or longer Police or Corrections training academy or similar program
- Minimum 1 year supervisor experience or equivalent job experience
- Maintain a current valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record and licensed to carry firearms
- Current certification in CPR, First Aid, Basic Life Support, and/or First Responder or must obtain within 90 days after hire
- Successfully complete a medical and drug screening examination IAW HR/CJTC police standards
- No criminal record which would prevent appointment as a licensed special police officer
- Ability to pass entrance level physical agility and annual physical fitness test
- Successful Candidate will be required to complete a full background check
Additional Information:
Salary: $19.10 per hour with $0.50 night differential; includes extensive benefits package.
